We’re Hiring: Part-Time Marketing Coordinator

Are you passionate about literary fiction and keen to support women and non-binary writers from Canada and the United States? The Carol Shields Prize Foundation seeks a self-motivated team player with exceptional communication skills to join our small but mighty team for a part-time contract January to May 2024. Reporting to the Program and Operations Manager, and working closely with the CEO and our contracted marketing firm, this part-time position will be integral to the marketing and promotion of the second annual Carol Shields Prize for Fiction, with an awards ceremony in Toronto, May 2024. 

About Us:

The Carol Shields Prize Foundation is a new charity incorporated in 2016 to support and raise the profile of women and non-binary writers in North America through a literary prize, charitable partnerships and public awareness. Named after beloved Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Carol Shields, the Carol Shields Prize for Fiction is the first major English-language literary award to celebrate creativity and excellence in fiction by women and non-binary writers in the U.S. and Canada. In addition, the Carol Shields Prize Foundation promotes women and non-binary writers’ fiction through a number of programs, including scholarships, residencies, and fellowships, primarily awarded to marginalized, underrepresented and emerging writers in the U.S. and Canada. The Carol Shields Prize Foundation is committed to advancing the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion in the literary world.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting outreach efforts to booksellers, including developing and executing communications strategies with bookstores and bookseller associations across the U.S. and Canada.

  • Researching the publishing landscape in the U.S. and Canada and updating an ongoing database of contacts.

  • Developing relationships and partnerships with key members of the literary community and influencers.

  • Managing the design, editing, and publication of the official 2024 Prize program and other materials, in collaboration with a freelance designer.

  • Coordinating the many tasks required in the lead up to the 2024 Prize, such as collating information about the authors longlisted and shortlisted for the Prize and organizing the production and distribution of prize stickers for books.

  • Proofreading marketing copy, including but not limited to social media posts and the monthly newsletter.

  • Updating the website with minor edits.

  • Assisting staff with a possible event in Toronto to announce either the long- or shortlist.

  • Assisting the Event Coordinator in the lead up to and the execution of the 2024 Prize Event.

  • Attendance at events during the Prize Event week in May 2024 in Toronto, Ontario, assisting with marketing, communications, and event duties as required.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of experience in marketing/communications 

  • Comfortable working in a G Suite/Google Workspace environment; comfortable with cloud-based systems and digital solutions

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills 

  • Collaborative and enjoys working with people 

  • A self-starter who can work independently and meet deadlines 

  • Passionate about equity, diversity, and inclusion for all

  • Strong understanding of Canadian and U.S. literary scene is an asset 

Additional Info:

  • This position is remote, with the option to join the CEO and Program and Operations Manager in an office share once a week in Toronto. Some in-person attendance at meetings and events in the GTA may be required

  • Part time limited term contract; flexible hours

  • Contractors may be asked to voluntarily provide their vaccination status

Reporting To: Reports to the Program and Operations Manager
Working With: Collaborates closely with CEO, Event Coordinator, and contracted marketing and publicity consultants.
Contract Dates: Approximately 4 months (20 weeks), from mid-January to end of May 2024
Contract fee: $25/hour for 20 hours per week
