We’re Hiring an Executive Director

We are looking for an individual with strong leadership, fundraising and collaboration skills. The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations and health of the organization, ensuring that the strategic goals of the Foundation are met and furthering its mission.

The Executive Director will guide the Foundation in delivering programs and partnering with other agencies to raise the profile of female writers in North America through a literary prize, charitable partnerships, and public education. Of particular note, the Executive Director will actively participate the launch of the Organization’s cornerstone program, “The Carol Shields Prize for Fiction,” an annual literary prize set to be awarded for the first time in May 2023.

This is a full-time permanent, remote work position reporting to the Chair of the Board of Directors. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.

Requirements:

Duties and Accountabilities:

The Executive Director will:

  • Lead fundraising efforts;

  • Manage, direct and execute all programs, events and partnerships in a manner that maximizes the Foundation’s reach while ensuring its reputation is upheld;

  • Ensure the smooth execution of all aspects of the Carol Shields Prize for Fiction, including solicitation and vetting of submissions, communications with jurors, and planning and implementation of the prize event

  • Oversee development and strategy of brand positioning, media strategy and internet presence; give input into key publications and communications.

  • Work collaboratively with key stakeholders, including Board members, publishers, charitable partners, donors, sponsors, and other related individuals and organizations across North America

  • Provide leadership and management in these and other areas:

    • Oversee staff and contractors

    • Planning, organizing and implementing fundraising structure;

    • Creation of strategic, tactical, scheduling, and financial plans as well as goals and measurements to achieve them.

    • Compliance with government and donor reporting

  • Other leadership duties as assigned by the Board or undertaken in support of the organization

The Carol Shields Prize Foundation is a new charity incorporated in 2016 to support and raise the profile of female writers in North America through a series of literary prizes, charitable partnerships and public awareness.
